INFINITI QX30 2.0 Premium AWD Review
Quaintly eXcellent

With its highly sculpted exterior, flowing lines, muscular bulges and wide stance, the QX30 clearly looks like the more chiselled sibling of its German half-brother.

What do you get when you combine the sportiness of a hatchback with the high vantage point of an SUV and the comfort of a sedan? You get the all-new Infiniti QX30 premium active crossover, a car that’s quaint in its stylings and pretty excellent in almost every department.

Let’s start with price. Infiniti is known to be the luxury offshoot of Nissan, much like Lexus to Toyota. So when you buy an Infiniti, you’re getting a premium car, and in this case, you’re also getting a car that looks like the slightly more buffed-half brother of the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250.

The Infiniti QX30 bears more than just a passing resemblance with the Mercedes-Benz GLA; it actually shares the same platform as well as its powertrain with the Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class. Yup, the heart of the QX30 is a Daimler engine.

The QX30 is the birth child that came from the partnership between the Renault-Nissan Alliance and Mercedes Benz's parent company, Daimler, a union that started in 2010. That’s why the QX30 has a similar chassis, suspension, 2-litre 208-horsepower 4-cylinder, inline turbocharged engine and 7-speed dual clutch gearbox as the Mercedes-Benz GLA 250… But it costs $9,000 less.

With its highly sculpted exterior, flowing lines, muscular bulges and wide stance, the QX30 clearly looks like the more chiselled sibling of its German half-brother. Its low-slung rear roof, stylish three-dimensional front grille mesh, satin chrome roof rails and satin chrome design inserts give the car a sporty and premium look. The car is certainly a head-turner. I was on the way to a lunch meeting, and I had just parked the car when a guy walked over from his E200 Merc to ask me what car it was. #truestory

The car’s tall elevated stance (overall height 1,530 mm) not only gives it an aggressive look, it also provides the driver with excellent visibility of road conditions and makes getting in and out of the car a breeze. I suffered a back injury two days before driving the QX30, and I really appreciated the comfortable ease of getting behind the wheel of the QX30. For those that don’t like climbing up into a tall SUV or having to crouch down to get into a low sedan, you’ll appreciate the QX30’s ideal H-point (1,324 mm). What’s that you say? Well, H-point measures the driver’s hip height from the road floor. A low H-point makes you feel like you’re driving a go-kart while too high a H-point will make you feel like you’re driving a bus.

In terms of tech advancements, the QX30 is no slouch. On top of its 7 airbags, it’s got a whole slew of useful electronic safety aids like Hill Start Assist (HSA), Lane Departure Warning (LDW) with Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), Intelligent Brake Assist (IBA), Forward Collision Warning (FCW), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) as well as Electronic Stability Programme (ESP).

All these as well as some niceties like keyless entry, automatic engine start/stop system, LED front headlights, daytime running lights, cruise control, speed limiter as well as electric powered seats with memory settings for both the driver and front passenger.

It also comes with the 360° Around View® Monitor and sonar system that detects and shows you objects and obstacles that are around the front, back and sides of your vehicle. Infiniti is a premium brand, and the level of tech available in the QX30 is testament to that.

We tested out the Intelligent Park Assist (IPA) feature and found that it worked very well – it worked well even for parallel parking lots! Once it detected the empty parking lot, the car was able to park itself reasonably well. All the driver needs to do is to put the car into the appropriate gear and manage the brake and throttle.

One thing to note is that the IPA only works when the available parking is in between two parked cars. However, we did have a few issues with the IPA sometimes not detecting empty parking lots. But when it did detect the vacant parking lot, it parked the car well.

We also enjoyed the lovely views from the panoramic “sunroof” with power sunshade. Infiniti calls it a “sunroof”, but it’s more of a moonroof as the roof portion doesn’t open up. It’s a fixed glass roof, so only the sunshade opens. So the benefit is that it gives you great views without letting the hot air from outside into the car.

The QX30 offers a smallish 368 litres of boot space, definitely not big enough to hold golf bags but it’ll be more than adequate for weekly groceries. One disappointment is the lack of powered tailgate lift assist.
