Honda Odyssey 2.4 EXV Review
Evolution, not revolution

You’d have to squint to tell that this is the new Odyssey on the outside, but as Raymond Lai discovers, Honda’s large MPV is as convincing as ever.

Introduction, styling

It’s hard not to see why the Odyssey has been one of Singapore’s best selling MPVs. The combination of handsome looks, strong performance, car-like handling, practicality and last but not least, Honda dependability has helped the Odyssey do strongly in the sales charts. With such a successful formula, it’s no surprise that Honda has decided upon the ‘if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’ principle when it designed and developed the fourth generation Odyssey that was introduced a little over four years ago.

These days though, the Odyssey’s superiority is the MPV class is rather less clear due to a variety of factors like competition from models like the Volkswagen Sharan as well as its uncompetitive pricing, with the latter in turn is not helped by the high value of the Japanese currency. To keep the Odyssey competitive in the MPV market, Honda has recently performed a nip and tuck on the Odyssey.

On the outside, the new model looks vaguely similar to the old from most angles as the changes are only limited to minor details like the grille and tail lamps. At the front, there’s still that aggressive snout like the old one albeit a more menacing one due to the FCX Clarity inspired radiator grille. The revised grille on the newer model features a more three-dimensional look than previously while the headlamps have also been slightly modified with more of a blue tint than ever before.

It is at the rear where the Odyssey is most changed from the old – there’s a new chrome strip running between the new wraparound LED tail lamps that gives the Odyssey’s rear a wider stance overall. Despite the relatively similar looks to its near half decade old predecessor, the updated Odyssey looks showroom fresh and is still styled like no other MPV in the market.
