BMW X4 xDrive20i X Line Review
Sheer Driving Pleasure

4 Dec 2018

Much like with durians, the X4 is a car that divides opinion — people either don’t like it or they are madly in love with it. But if there’s one thing that everyone can agree on, and it’s that this all-new X4 looks absolutely beastly.

I can’t think of a better way to put a car to the test than to drive it nearly 600kms from Ipoh back to Singapore. I had the opportunity to do just that recently on a BMW Escape the City 2018 road trip organised by Performance Motors Ltd. Being able to take the BMW X4 xDrive20i through the small town roads in Ipoh and on the North-South highway is a great way to see just how well the car performs, and to really put it through its paces.

Much like with durians, the X4 is a car that divides opinion — people either don’t like it or they are madly in love with it. But if there’s one thing that everyone can agree on, and it’s that this all-new X4 looks absolutely beastly.

The car looks striking, and it looks huge. With a length of 4,752 millimetres, width of 1,918 millimetres and a height of 1,621 millimetres, you can see why the car looks massive.

One of the things that BMW fans love about the brand is its heritage and signature BMW brand elements like the Hofmeister kink (yes there’s a name for that little inward-sloping kink on the C-pillar of BMW cars) and of course, that signature kidney grille. On the X4, the kidney grille has been given a three-dimensional look, and they look even larger than before. Together with its contoured and bright LED headlight unit, the car is an imposing sight when it comes up to anyone looking into their rear-view mirror. Driving on the North-South highway, I can tell you that indeed, people do move quickly out of the way when they see an X4 bearing down on them!

Styling-wise, the X4 is like a hybrid mix between a coupe and an SUV. BMW calls the X4 a Sports Activity Coupe (SAC), a name we find apt. The car looks muscular with its distinct shoulder line (the line on the side of the car that runs from the door handles down to the tail-lights), and its sculpted bulges really give the car presence and character. Twin exhaust tailpipes complete that sporty look and make the SAC look… well, ‘SAC-xy’.

The all-new X4 comes in three trim variants comprising of xLine, M Sport X and M Sport. Our test car is the xLine version, and the car is furnished with metallic silver elements on the outside and styling accents with a brushed aluminium finish on the inside. For anyone wishing to have a unique and exclusive X4, you can also specify options from the BMW Individual range

The X4 xDrive20i produces 184 horsepower and 290Nm of torque from its twin-scroll turbocharged, four cylinder 1,998 cc engine. Top Speed is 215km/h, and it completes the 0-100 km/h sprint in 8.3 seconds. On the North-South highway, the car was a real pleasure to drive. We reached speeds close to its max, and the car felt comfortable and sure-footed at all times. Whenever I wanted to overtake, it always felt like there was enough power on hand to call upon when needed.

This all-new BMW X4 weighs up to 50 kilograms less than its predecessor, thanks to intelligent use of weight-saving materials not just in the chassis, but also in the car’s construction and various other components. This car uses more aluminium as well as high-strength and ultra-high-strength grades of steel. The result of this is improved body structure rigidity and consequently, vehicle agility and occupant protection.

Aerodynamic drag is also reduced by around 10 per cent thanks to a more streamlined body as well as the incorporation of additional measures like active air flap control, Air Curtains in the front apron and additional underbody cladding. It can be a bit technical to discuss how these drag reducing features work, but the key takeaway is that this all-new BMW X4 sets a new benchmark in its segment with a drag coefficient of 0.30. And why is that important? A car with less drag is a car that will consume less fuel.

One useful feature on the car is the Automatic Hold functionality. It helps the driver to automatically set and release the brake by holding the brakes when the car is stationary. Perfect for stop-and-go traffic like when we were caught in the jam at the Second Link!

Driving on the North-South highway, it was also comforting to know that the car comes with an SOS button in case of any accidents. The Intelligent Emergency Call feature can be triggered manually, or automatically if an airbag is deployed. The BMW Call Centre will be contacted via an accident-proof telephone unit that’s permanently installed in the BMW vehicle.
