Ferrari GTC4Lusso T Review
Practical Family Fun

Lesser power is still very quick!

A car for practical family fun! Well, not quite. But this is as close as you can get to doing that if you were to have spare change and would want a Ferrari.

Following Ferrari’s launch of the GTC4Lusso, a GT-style four-seater with a V12 engine, they now have a “slightly” milder V8 version. The GTC4Lusso T is Ferrari’s first four-seater to be powered by a V8. The car’s 600hp engine is shared with their recently launched Portofino drop top.

Styling-wise, their GT sports thick-beefy bulges on the front and rear fenders, and in true Shooting Brake style, the car only has two passenger doors. Its front grille and headlamp styling is unmistakable to the brand.

The “milder” turbocharged V8, mounted as far-aft the front axle as possible, and mated to a 7-speed dual clutch transmission; and driving only the rear wheels, takes the car to 100km/h in only 3.5 seconds... Lesser power is still very quick!

Delivery of the GTC4’s massive 760Nm is in stages, thanks to Ferrari’s Variable Boost Management (VBM) system; which manages the amount of torque the engine is able to produce, in relation to which gear the car is in; with an increasing torque curve from third gear, through to seven, where at you can experience the V8 at maximum twist. The system ensures that the GTC4Lusso T is also able to attain substantially better fuel consumption figures, with the added help of long gear ratios in later gears, versus its V12 sibling (Ferrari claims up to 30% over the larger engine). The other major advantage is a car that is not unwieldy in your hands in lower gears.

Speaking about hands, communication from the road to the palms of your hands is excellent. Though the car feels superbly reactive to your inputs, the rear-wheel steering does tend to occasionally feel a little on the nervous side. That said, in the driver’s seat, there is that honest satisfaction of “any gear works” delivery of torque, and your butt basically knows where the rear end is going at all times.

Perhaps a little counter to what Ferrari had intended to build, something a little more civilised on the inside, with the right amount of insulation; I would have personally preferred a little more engine noise within the cabin, when that glorious award-winning flat-plane style crank V8 opens up.

The front-engine and rear drive format also delivers less of that edgy Supercar feel, and encourages you to to drive slightly less aggressive… and that is where the GTC4Lusso T rewards you, with a balanced 46:54% front-to-rear ride, still firm on the most comfortable of settings, but not to the point of being too jarring. You can toss this car around track for sure, but it really is intended for that brisk long distance haul.
