Aston Martin DB11 V8 Coupe Review
Doing an Eleven with Eight

Quite a clever move as a dry sump system would have added more weight...

It usually means a less entertaining drive when you own a variant of a car with a smaller, less powerful engine… which is the fact in most cases. And then there are times when you find that the reverse is the case.

Take for instance, the beautiful Jaguar Mark 2 form the 1960s, where legend had it that a skilled appointed getaway driver, preparing for a bank robbery would prefer to nick the smaller engined variant, as the car was more nimble, making it actually quicker around the turns.

So you see the DB11 with four less cylinders is quite like that. Less weight in the front from less metal under the hood. Sure, the 5.2 litre V2 model does 600bhp, almost 100 more than the V8, but all of that beats the V8’s 4 second century sprint by 0.1 seconds. Only when you can find a place where you can allow that V12 to stretch a little, will the difference of the added horsepower and 25Nm make a noticable difference.

The smaller and familiar 4.0 twin-turbocharged 90 degree V8 is sourced from Mercedes-AMG, but with a few tweaks; like a slimmer wet sump, allowing the engine to sit lower in the engine bay for better centre of gravity. Quite a clever move as a dry sump system would have added more weight by way of added pumps, and a tank positioned somewhere else in the bay to run the system. Strangely enough, its engine management system is not taken from AMG, but developed together with Bosch.

In ensuring optimum balance, the V8 is positioned as far back of the front axle as possible, helping the car to achieve near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution. That said, the engine bay was built long and wide enough to house two engines in-mind, and not where the smaller V8 was an afterthought. The V12 is a narrower 60 degree block and the AMG-built V8 in a wider 90 degree angle. With its smaller load up front, the V8 model is actually almost 120kg lighter than the V12, and certainly a little less nose-heavy.

Crank the engine, and you will also note that the V8 does not come across as loud and vulgar (we were hoping it would) but rather, it burbles in anticipation.

Within the cabin, hand-stitched two-tone leather, supple in feel envelopes you with its scent. The seats, door cards and even the dash are covered in such lovely cow hide. Even the Mercedes-sourced Command infotainment controls are surrounded in hand stitched goodness. Seats are superbly supportive with memory settings for both driver and passenger.

Unlike more mainstream car builds, Aston Martin opted for a greater use of metal where it counts. The air-conditioning vents and door handles are cast in aluminium, lending to a feel that you are in indeed something special.
