Subaru Forester 2.0 X, Subaru Forester 2.5 XT Review
X or XT factor?

Before the Mazda MPV, SUV, or any of those so called “crossover” vehicles, there was the Subaru Forester.

In many worlds it did, and still does form a near perfect compromise between the flexibility and utility of an SUV, combined with the sharp handling dynamics of a car. After all, it is still based on the venerable Impreza WRX platform.

Market research in the US has concluded that Forester inspires higher owner loyalty as compared to any other vehicle in production.

Versions 2007, both 2.0X and 2.5XT, benefit from something the industry terms, a “mid-cycle refresh”. What this means to you, is that the customer gets a fairly extensive, reworked package of the existing model that isn't a ground-up redesign.

Internal changes made to their unusual, horizontally opposed engines mean that the turbocharged Forester 2.5XT gets the biggest boost, making it one of the more exhilarating vehicles of its type to drive. Singapore only gets the 4 speed automatic, but all-wheel drive is standard on all models.

Both the front and rear have been subtly restyled, creating a more serious, less playful appearance. While they aren’t a crazy makeover and certainly no inside of a MINI, they do add to the creature comforts and convenience, especially with respect to passengers riding in the back seat.

The suspension has been revised in to improve ride comfort, adding a bit more ground clearance for the off-road fanatic in you.

Subaru fanatics (believe me there are plenty) will immediately notice the slightly taller stance. Ground clearance has been increased from 191mm to 206mm on the 2.0X, and to 200mm on the 2.5XT. That 1cm or so is going to make a world of difference the minute you see yourself enthusiastically diving into a corner at full throttle with a grin on your face, preferably after you’ve predictably countersteered…

Of course, you might not expect it to be a head turner, but that working air scoop on the 2.5XT still commands respect. The Forester is a small vehicle compared to a normal, midsized people mover. What it does though, is make efficient use of it’s interior. Beauty lies more in it’s functional design since its relatively boxy. Impressively, it is fairly aerodynamic with a sedan-like drag coefficient of 0.36.
