BMW calls this Adaptive LED Headlights with High-Beam Assistant...
Back in 2008, yours truly was in Dresden, Germany to welcome the new F01 BMW 7 Series and also bid farewell to the controversial Mr. Bangle’s version.
In every sense of the word, the F01 was a significantly improved 7 Series; it looks sophisticated and refined, interior build quality and architecture were as different as day and night, and last but not least, a better engine and transmission.
Of course, many drivers saw these differences – locally, the F01 enjoyed brisk sales among both individual and corporate buyers, and even into its fourth year, demands are still steady.
Before the F01 hits the fifth year mark next year, it recently went under the knife for some nip and tucking to keep it relevant.
But here’s the most important bit: it also received some technical improvements. Needless to say, BMW assures us that the updated 7 Series will be much better.
So before we go into the technical bits, let’s begin with the exterior updates.
Styling is obviously a big part of the 7 Series’ appeal. It’s a great looking car, simple as that. It has a classic solidity, appearing almost as though it was squeezed from the mould as one solid mass of metal.
It maintains the similar body shape of the first-generation F01, but take a closer look and you should be able to notice a face that now consists of a slimmer pair of headlamps, bigger kidney grills and a BMW first, ‘air curtain’ technology; reshaped LED-ed foglamps and a lower front bumper that gets air intakes designed to provide better aerodynamic efficiency. Additional chrome accents help liven things up.
18-inch alloys come standard but there is still the option to upsize to 19-inch.
BMW may not be the first to implement this full LED headlamp trend, but making it friendly towards other road users might be the Bavarian’s technology. BMW calls this Adaptive LED Headlights with High-Beam Assistant: this headlamps, although seemingly bright and does a brilliant job of lighting the darkest of roads, has been designed to not allow any sort of glare to drivers in front or oncoming direction.
With image sensors measuring a distance of between 400 to 1,000 metres away, this system determines the strength of the high-beam required and varies it according to the traffic surrounding the car. Ingenious.
While some details were done to refresh the car’s face, next to nothing has been done to the rear. If you can spot the addition, my, such sharp eyes you have there…
Only a chrome strip has been added between the two reflectors at the lower part of the bumper, to differentiate the old to F01 version two. A little disappointing, really.
SwiftQuote helped me get the highest possible price for my car, when many dealers around were low-balling me. Very impressed with their response time and how fast I managed to sell my car. The dealer that bought my car was also very genuine and it was a fuss free process, 10/10 would recommend.
