Considering how both the Golf GTI and Megane RS utilises simple, user-friendlier sets, you really wonder why Ford went down that route.

If the brief was to make the interior feel special without breaking the bank, the Focus ST easily aces. The most innovative thing about the interior is that well-positioned gearlever – it’s close to the driver and really does work well. Of course you can never go wrong with a pair of Recaros too, feeling supportive at the right places and hugging you snugly; if you could, maybe you might want to consider fitting a set of four-point harness too, just to fulfil the entire ‘racer’ feel.

The cockpit is obviously where you want to be in. The four-spoke steering wheel is nicely sized and not too chunky – then again, the numerous controls really begs the question ‘do you really need them all there?’



The air-con controls feels expensive, and at the top of the dashboard, you get the must-have turbo boost, oil pressure and oil temperature gauges. A little gimmicky, but heck, it sure does make the entire cockpit, well, special. Aluminium pedals adds the finishing touch.

That centre console might polarise opinions though: the vertical air-con vents you can live with. The rather small monitor might need some getting used to especially if you’re short sighted (like me). But the whole Sony audio controls, especially with that piano-black finish and tacky buttons probably taken off Nokia handphones of yore might put people off. Considering how both the Golf GTI and Megane RS utilises simple, user-friendlier sets, you really wonder why Ford went down that route. They probably forgot that simplicity should take precedence in a hot-hatch…

Admittedly, the Focus ST does a good job of accommodating four adults. The rear seats doesn’t make you feel as though you’re squatting on them, provides proper support when the driver decides to have some quick fun, and best of all, you get ample leg and headroom. Like a Volvo V60.

A lot of thought has gone into who is going to buy the Focus ST and what they’re going to use it for. Amazingly, Ford has come up with a novel idea that people will be buying this car also for the extra space, so the result it it’s very user-friendly. The 60/40 split seat folds down almost flat, ensuring Ikea shopping days are worry-free. To top it all off, the rear hatch opens high, making loading easy.
