High on 5

The Q5's latest update includes saying farewell to the 3.2-litre V6 lump, and hello to a more potent 3.0-litre supercharged one

Introduction, Exterior

SUVs are a dime a dozen in our market, which is an interesting case if you think about it, considering how small our market is, and there is no space for SUVs to be exploited here.

That said, the pick up rate for SUVs, particularly those in the premium segment, are surprisingly high, which should explain why every brand has at least one in their product line up.

Now let’s focus on Audi’s Q5. It’s a brilliant product when it was first launched here somewhere back in 2009: nicely shaped, potent engine and transmission combo and most importantly, it’s an Audi. Of course with COE prices back then less ridiculous than what it is right now, the Q5 was flying off the showroom floor like hot bagels…

And the fact that BMW’s X3 was aging, Volvo’s XC60 was receiving lukewarm responses because it’s not German and Volkswagen’s Tiguan wasn’t a premium enough product for badge-conscious drivers.

Now coming into its fourth year product cycle, Audi’s middle ground SUV (it slots between the Q3 and Q7) receives some refreshing touches and, more importantly, a new engine.

If you remember clearly, it was first introduced with two engine variants: a 211 bhp turbocharged 2.0-litre TFSI and a bigger 270 bhp 3.2-litre V6. No need to guess which sold better…

In all honesty, the 3.2-litre version is smooth and creamy; but it lacks the sort of pulling power a 1.8-tonne SUV needs. So seeing that issue, Ingolstadt’s power house look no further than to introduce force-induction for it’s mark two Q5.

In terms of exterior, the Q5 you see here – fitted with the S-Line kit – hasn’t aged a single day. It retains that sporty character, although some will opine it looks like an A4 on stilts from a distance (maybe from some 5 km away). Those 20-inch alloys, wrapped in 255/45 R-20 Goodyear Excellence rubbers, definitely fill all four wheel arches beautifully – unfortunately though, it’s a cost option.

Still can’t spot the new touches? Well, let’s begin with the face. The updated Q5 sports a new pair of headlamps which now comes with redesigned daytime running light (expect look-alikes to come to an accessory shop near you), highly-detailed bumper with more ventilation slots and a newly shaped grill – the upper part is less angular. And where you find the front license plate housing is now finished in glossy black.

Its rear comes with a set of redesigned tail lamps too, which are now brighter and prominent enough for you to know it’s a Q5 especially at night. The bumper comes with a different diffuser at the lower part; at the same time, even the exhaust tail pipes are flat-bottomed (ala Porsche Cayenne) now.
