Jeep Compass Limited 2.4 Review
A (Compass) Rose with Thorns

Those of you who grew up and knew Jeep for what it was – a tough, four by four with a big, grunting V8 will, not like this new model.

That really isn’t the point though, because Jeep has entered the competitive crossover market with the Compass, which by the way, is the first of its brand to be car based, and also one with no hardcore off-road ability (think Wrangler).

Simply put, this car was made to go head on with the likes of a Honda CRV, Chevrolet Captiva or a Toyota RAV4.

Caliberistic Ambitions

The underpinnings of this Jeep is essentially, a Dodge Caliber, with the body panels, chassis geometry and engine changed. It isn’t that large, which is good, because there is enough space for everyone.

At just over 440 centimetres long, the Compass is about 20cm shorter than a RAV4.

We had the Limited, 4x4 model for the weekend, which retails for about $98,000, and for that you get the standard 18-inch wheels and tires, heated front seats, leather seats, keyless entry, side curtain airbags and traction control.

Sorry. Too much hard plastics around. Not that it looks cheap, but while the Compass isn’t a hardcore Jeep, we feel that the interior should have been toned down a little to something more “car like”.

Not to say that it is uncomfortable – the seats authoritatively command the comfort levels of the driver, and the equally commanding driving position is a refreshing change from that of a normal sedan.

As compared to the Caliber, the front seats are significantly different from that of the passenger – 2 inches higher and 1 inch forward, according to Jeep.

For what it is, an urban runaround, the rather thick A-pillars and headrests obstructed more of my view than it should have. It wasn’t really a problem, but more of a small nag in traffic jams.

Despite being smaller than the competition, rear legroom is indeed impressive for the averaged sized Asian. You could probably stuff a Michael Jordan behind the driver and he wouldn’t complain.

Fold the seats flat and you immediately find that you won’t break out into a sweat. The cargo area is small though, less than what you might find in a Ford Escape or a RAV4.
