The bombproof Iron-block 4G63 unit that we don’t get in Singapore has finally cracked in favour of the new, aluminum-blocked 4B11, which sits far more forward in its bay as compared to the GLX.
The new 2.0-litre four pot gives you 152 horses, while a mid-sized torque curve that starts with 184 Nm @ 2000rpm, reaches its flattish peak of 198 Nm at 2,250rpm later. No surprises there, considering Mitsubishi incorporated their trademark MIVEC variable valve timed cams that take charge of both intake and exhaust slits.
Good news indeed, but seeing as how the GT is now overweight by as much as 182 kg, this pretty much bogs down the whole tearing-up-the-tarmac affair.
The four-wheel disc brakes are a direct liftoff from the Outlander, believe it or not, and although I think it reeks of effort that was spared, it no doubt hints towards the GT’s excellent braking abilities. The GT we sampled came with a 5-speed manual that on its own, pretty much outclasses many stock hot hatch transmissions we’ve tested, more of that later on.This is where it gets interesting. The new Lancer (I should stop calling it that) is a different thing altogether. For starters, nearly everything is shrouded in leather. The two-toned seats, door panels, gearknob and steering wheel for one, hints toward its luxurious leanings.
The dashboard belies its “leatherous” touch though, and it does look rather clumsily done in comparison to the plush everything else. The driving position of the GT is near perfect, despite the lack of telescopic adjustment for the steering wheel – a move that we feel is sorely needed in today’s evolving Japanese car.
Once adjusted to this rather different climate, you will then crank the engine and be greeted by a simple welcome message should you be looking at the instrument cluster; in english no less.
Prompt and Fast. Service officer Muhd Yazid was very helpful in guiding the sales, and when urgent assistance is required! Kudos to officer for being able to address all queries.
