Hot hatches are meant to make people emit strange and approving noises. Cars like the Golf GTI, the Ford Focus ST or even the UK-Spec Honda Civic Type-R, all had a certain inimitable charm to them. Whether it was the looks, performance or the sheer madness of it (like the Megane R26), there was bound to be something which strongly attracted to most of us.

Usually it was the performance, and sometimes there was the bonus of the eccentricity of it all – like the Megane’s wicked styling and the UK Civic’s triangular exhausts and body contours.

As for Citroen’s new C4 2.0 VTS, it feels like it was born out of absolute irreverence to how people’s perception of style is nowadays. Sure, it isn’t as out-of-this-world as Lamborghini’s latest Reventon (which was basically a big “Up Yours”, in sexy metal form, to their Italian rivals), but it is still quite something to look at. And I love it because it is daring.

Stylish, just like its makers

Wearing its chevron insignia which has been proudly incorporated onto its bonnet, the angular features on this car are further enhanced by the headlamps, which flow up along the shut-lines to successfully create the illusion of a mean and angry machine staring down at you.

However, somewhat disappointingly, the version in the flesh has received a little revision since a certain Mr Malvalvo drew it on sketches. The front lower air-intake area has been vandalised by grilles and desecrates the original drawing’s wide-open inverted V-shaped gap, a design element that would have definitely boosted the visual aggression.
