Daihatsu Sirion 1.5 Sports Review

The pint-sized (or two) Daihatsu Sirion was actually quite nice in the standard 1.3 litre form. Now it receives an extra boost in power in the form of a 1.5-litre, uprated engine with better suspension. They call it a Sport. Hmm...

Daihatsu quotes 102 bhp at 6000rpm and 138Nm at 4400rpm for the four speed automatic that we’ve tested. Furthermore, they claim 6.7 litres of petrol consumed for every 100 kilometres travelled on the combined EU cycle, which sounds pretty remarkable. Then again, it weighs just over 970 kilograms and the engine is sort of related to the 1NZ-FE variant found in the Vios.

Accurately speaking, it is the DVVT (Dynamic Variable Valve Timing) equipped 3SZ-VE found in the Malaysian Toyota Avanza.

The Sirion has an "intelligent", self-regenerating catalytic converter that Daihatsu claims, removes substantially more pollusive material from the exhaust produce compared to the standard ones found in your normal, run-off-the-mill cars of today.

It is also claimed that the cat will go longer without needing any form of replacement.

All power isn’t good, and Daihatsu seems to realize this by beefing up the rear torsion bar setup with stabilizers. They claim to have revised the damper and spring rates in order for the car to put up with increased cornering speeds, while anti-lock brakes and electronic brake-force distribution are standard.

Comfort and styling

Outside, the Sport comes with a distinctive styling package. This includes a revised bumper which looks slightly more aggressive and “sportlisch”, although the deep set front spoiler with a mesh grille looks very similar to that of the front end from TRD. Also on the front are round foglamps and headlights that are integrated as a whole in typical Sirion style. The rear gets a spoiler and revised tail lamp clusters.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
