Interior & accommodation

the second row seats are well sculpted, and on long journeys, are a very comfy affair

The Previa feels more spacious between the two, and this can be attributed all thanks to its 2,950mm wheelbase, which is some 100mm more than the S-Max. It allows occupants to move around the cabin with much ease, and it’s a chiropractic breeze when everyone wants to get in and out of the car – not much seat movements required, and the sliding door score points for utmost practicality. During one of those guys night out, you can be assured that five of your other mates can sit at the back without a single complain – yes, it’s that spacious.

It’s a colourful affair if you were to take a close look at the Previa’s interior. The dark grey / beige combination works well, but accompanied by faux wooden panel that feels very plastic to the touch, the whole interior just shouts “uncle!” to us. But thankfully there’s the aluminium bit to add a slightly modern touch. We appreciate the fuss-free and user friendly dashboard layout which has no unnecessary hidden buttons or switch – everything is laid out right ahead of you. The Kenwood DVD head unit that doubles up as a reverse camera screen and GPS display definitely goes a long way in giving the whole interior a premium touch.

The Previa's interior is more spacious than the S-Max's

S-Max's interior colour scheme and quality gets our thumbs up

The all black affair in the S-Max’s interior is something much loved by the team. It matches the sporty theme of the car very well, and the solid build quality ups the ante for the MPV league – much thoughts were obviously given to make the S-Max’s interior what it is. But what remain questionable are the shiny aluminium bits – it reflects light and can cause a wee bit of distraction especially when driving under the bright sun. That aside, the rest of the S-Max’s interior are really good quality stuff – premium leather, flush Sony audio head unit and a plethora of fancy buttons and displays that will be a talking point among your mates.

This is a little tricky – it takes quite some work and seat movements if you do need to utilise the third row of seat in the S-Max. And we don’t recommend you put an adult back there too – well, unless it’s someone you’re not fond of, like say, that jerk of a brother-in-law or nosy aunt you have. But the second row seats are well sculpted, and on long journeys, are a very comfy affair. Being 85mm wider than the Previa, the S-Max provides excellent shoulder room, so putting three full-sized adults there shouldn’t be an issue at all.

Driving position wise, the S-Max has the edge over the Previa - the S-Max is definitely built for the sort of driver who loves body-hugging seats wanting to be in constant control, while the Previa’s obviously more for soccer mums. The S-Max’s steering wheel is nicely-sized and not too chunky, and this is something drivers with that enthusiastic streak will greatly appreciate. Plus with that many buttons, you can stay focused while driving and still channel jog or adjust the volume. How about the Previa’s then? Besides it being equally nicely-sized, there’s nothing more to talk about it.
