Inside the shark/Acronyms galore!

Like all Evolutions before it, the interior of this new one shares the same interior as the base Lancer, with the exception of the Recaro front seats that have been specifically designed for the Evolution X. The new Recaros hug you snugly and give you enough comfort for your day-to-day punt around Singapore.

The steering wheel further set the Evolution X apart from the Lancer EX. Exclusive to the Evolution X is a smaller 356mm diameter leather steering wheel that incorporates the AWC mode selector, together with magnesium alloy paddle shifters for the TC-SST transmission.

The instrumentation binnacle houses white illuminated dials with a multi-information display panel that shows everything from fuel consumption to the S-AWC indicator. Stylish the binnacle may be, but with the dials and the display panel fighting for attention, it can be a challenge to read the gauges for the information that you might be looking for.

Again, with tradition of Evolutions being practical day-to-day performance cars, the Evolution X also sports a rear 1,350mm bench that will seat 3 comfortably at the back and a boot space to put your groceries in. However, even though the Lancer EX and Evolution X share similar rear design, the boot space for the Evolution X is smaller due to the washer fluid and battery taking up one-fifth of the available space (yes, the washer fluid and battery is located in the rear).

If there ever was an award for a car with the most acronyms, the Evolution X will win it hands down.

This new Evolution comes with (take a deep breath now) a 4B11 turbocharged DOHC MIVEC engine mated to the new TC-SST which delivers power to all 4 wheels controlled by an on-board computer software called S-AWC. The S-AWC monitors and controls the ACD (Active center differential), AYC (Active Yaw control), ASC (Active stability control) and ABS (Anti-lock braking) to enhance cornering, traction and vehicle stability under all driving conditions.

Quite a mouthful, isn’t it?

In layman’s term, this means that the handling of the new Lancer Evolution X is governed by a computer that monitors the steering response, torque and braking force on each wheel to decide how best to deliver the power from the 1,998cc engine turbocharged engine so that the car will go where you want it, and not where you do not want it, like in a ditch.

S-AWC has been developed to deliver natural handling and stability by making full use of all four wheels using an electronically controlled system to faithfully transmit the driver’s intent to the vehicle. The four system component under S-AWC monitors and controls different aspects of the car. ACD regulates the speed differential between the front and rear wheels to enhance steering response and traction. The AYC regulates the torque differential between the rear wheels to enhance cornering performance and traction. ASC regulates the brake force at each wheel and engine output to stabilize the vehicle attitude and enhance acceleration from rest. Lastly, the ABS prevents wheels from locking under hard braking in all road conditions.

The S-AWC integrates and provides unified control over these systems to help enhance cornering, traction and vehicle stability not just during acceleration, but also during cornering under different driving situations. The S-AWC mode selector on the steering wheel allows the driver to choose the control mode best suited to the current road condition (Tarmac, gravel and snow).
