The Focus gets freshened up to fight off its ever increasing base of rivals

I still remembered the first time I drove a Ford Focus some seven years back. Back then, I said to a colleague - “This is one car which proves that family cars don’t necessarily have to be a boring handler!” Yeap, I was that impressed with the original Focus’ handling dynamics.

Fast forward to 2005, and the second generation Focus was introduced. And again it is still one of, if not, the best handling car in its class - but putting on some flab during the incarnation. The second generation Focus is now over three years old and it finally gets an update – which means another chance to get behind the wheel of one once again.

So it seems that the new Focus is the same old story as the previous model so far. What’s new then? Outwardly, the new model features a new look that is more in line with the rest of the Blue Oval’s models - this is the look that first appeared on cars like the Mondeo and S-Max. Well, just in case you’re not aware, it is called the “Kinetic Design”.

It is up front where the Focus gets the most changes. It gets a redesigned headlamp assembly which is more upswept and curvier than its predecessor’s. These are further complimented by a new bonnet which sees more pronounced creases and also a new radiator grille. The front bumper is also all new, and with those large air intake, echoes that of the Mondeo’s and at the same time giving the new Focus a more distinctive face.

Inside, the new car features new and much improved switchgears, most notably the air-con controls and the new factory fitted Sony head unit. There's also a new instrument pack with a comprehensive trip computer display on our test model. The unit we test-drove here, which is the top-of-the-range version, also comes with a factory-fitted sunroof, dual-zone digital air-con, electrical seat for driver and cruise control.

The four-door isn’t as pretty as the hatch, but we’re pretty sure most local motorists will still prefer it. All in all, the changes on the Focus’ exterior has freshen it up quite a fair bit.
