CitroŽn C5 3.0i V6 Review
French kiss...

A large executive with some Gallic charm – that’ll be the new Citroen C5

The French simply love hatchbacks. They built one of the best supermini hatchbacks around, in the form of models like the Renault Clio and Peugeot 207. And even their mid-sized models (Megane, 308, C4) are best enjoyed as hatches. Not surprising then, that the French have attempted to make large-sized hatchback models as well - but with varying success, we have to say.

Large French hatchback models that haven’t won many fans include the likes of the Renault 25, Safrane and Vel Satis as well as the Citroen XM, Xantia and the C5.

With the new, second generation C5, it’s no surprise that the marketing men at Citroen had a big rethink about their full-size challenger after the previous hatchback bodied C5 failed to win many fans around the world.

The new C5 is no longer a five-door hatchback. It’s now a four-door saloon that somehow manages to look like a hatchback with its rather short boot line. The new saloon is a very well-proportioned car indeed, at the same time featuring styling elements from Citroen models like the C4 and C6.

Up front, the C5 adopts the C4’s upswept headlamps. And to make it better, this is another iteration of the nicely detailed double-chevron radiator grille to complement the headlamps. Just like the C4 Picasso, the C5 features a vast expanse of windscreen area.

Look carefully and you’ll also notice that the A-pillars are steeply raked. And together with the sloping roof line, gives the C5 a coupe-like profile that not only looks sporty, BUT elegant as well.

The graceful C-pillar treatment incorporates a rear three-quarter glass area, while the short boot line makes the C5 look somewhat like a hatchback, especially from the side. The curved base of the rear windscreen is inspired by the C6, and is a nice design touch. But the tail lamp clusters look somewhat nondescript – a bit like those seen on the Lexus GS300.

The C5 isn’t the most groundbreaking Citroen ever in terms of styling, but its well-proportioned looks certainly have a certain Gallic charm to it.
