Supercars are cool, but an estate with an engine from a supercar WITH supercar performance, is sub-zero

Honestly, I’ve been looking forward to this one since I first read its press release more than a year back. I’ve always loved Audi’s RS models – simply because the Porsche-developed RS 2 Avant and the subsequent RS 4s are just the perfect every day car.

But this latest RS model is a little more special than the ones before it. The RS 6 Avant is the word’s fastest production estate – with an engine derived from the one seen in the Lamborghini Gallardo, it’s really hard to dispute this claim.

Outwardly, you can tell that the RS 6 is no ordinary A6 Avant. Up front, there is a deeper bumper with large air intakes while the grille inserts are honeycombed, RS style. Not forgetting the LED tail lamps and oval exhaust tips on each side at the rear.

But the RS 6’s best go-faster bit on the outside has to be those heavily flared wheel arches housing the 20-inch alloys. The squared off look of the swollen arches are apparently inspired by the original quattro coupe and Audi’s iconic Group B rally machines.

The car we drove came with blacked out grille and window surrounds (chrome as standard) as well as gun metal coloured wheels. But even with those, the overall look is nothing short of purposeful.

Inside, it’s not a whole world of difference from a standard A6 Avant. There are the usual RS go-faster bits like sports seats, aluminium foot pedals, flat-bottomed steering wheel and carbon fibre trimming. The instruments are bespoke to the RS 6 – it features a 330km/h speedo and the coloured display has a screen that displays lap time, boost pressure and oil temperature.

Obviously, the Avant model here has a big and practical boot. In case you’re never big on the idea of owning an estate, a saloon model will be introduced somewhere next year.
