Provider of M-thrills for the family man, just don't push your luck with this one when you see it on the road

Aesthetics

Any car that has racing DNA in them will most obviously set our hearts on fire. BMW’s M3 is one example of such a car. Introduced back in 1986, the first generation M3 won countless touring car races and championships, as well as prestigious races such as the Macau Grand Prix and the Nurburgring 24-Hours.

With every successive generation, the M3 evolved to keep up with the competition. Now, the M3 enters its fourth evolution with the E90/92/93 model. The latest M3 is available in three body styles – coupe, saloon and convertible. The saloon is available for the first time in the M3 line-up since the second generation E36 model.

Outwardly, the new M3 Saloon is a prime example of subtle aggression, especially in this silver hue of the car here. At the same time, it looks sporty in a purposeful way.

There are obviously changes to the exterior from the garden-variety 3 Series saloon to improve its looks and aerodynamic performance. Up front, there’s that M style front bumper with the gaping air intakes to feed cold air directly to the radiator and brakes. And how can you forget that power dome and air vents on the bonnet and the flared wheel arches?

At the rear, there’s a subtle lip spoiler on the boot lid. And beneath the sculpted bumper are the signature M quad tail pipes. If there’s anything to nitpick though, it’s with the deletion of the coupe’s carbon fibre roof, and the rear lamps – why aren’t they even smoked or tinted for a much sportier touch?

Inside, BMW has done little to differentiate the M3 from lesser 3 Series saloons. Everything looks the same, bar the M three-spoke steering wheel, M illuminated gear knob, M instrument cluster and the sports seats. The latter offers superb adjustments for the side bolsters as well, so that they can hug you tight when pushed hard.

Like any other 3 Series saloon models, rear leg and headroom are reasonable if not class-leading. This is one really fast car which you can either bring your mates or ‘junior’ along. The boot is also well-sized to gobble up anything for your daily needs.
