The individual winners

5 Jan 2009

We had a tough time deliberating who goes into the Car of the Year table for 2008. After finalising our collective choices, we got you, our readers to vote. And we have to 'fess up though, that it was exciting to view the poll everyday - you did your part so well at voting, that even we can't seem to have a rough idea who will win each category. Now that we at oneshift.com, and you our dear readers have done your part, we proudly present to you all the category winners...

MPV of the Year

Volkswagen Touran Sport TSI 1.4

The Touran was rated rather highly not only among our judges, but also among our readers’ polls. With true 7 seats capability, an award winning TSI engine, the fast shifting DSG gearbox, low road tax and solid German build quality, there isn’t much not to like about this capable load carrier. If we were to nit-pick, the price at S$87.8k is a tad steep, the side and rear design of the car is too boxy for our liking and the interior design is typical Volkswagen – you've seen one, you've seen them all.

But all these drawbacks fade away once you experience the acceleration coming from the 1.4 TSI engine, the impressionable handing for the vehicle this tall and the load-lugging tenacity of the 1.4 TSI at full load.

This is definitely the most capable MPV to enter our market this year and truly deserve to win in the MPV category.

Executive Sedan of the Year

Audi A4 TFSI 1.8

Choosing award winners in the arts must be a piece of cake compared with this. You see, we don’t subjectively consider which product provided us with the most enjoyment in the year, or which is likely to be of most commercial benefits. No, we have to decide, largely by objective analysis, which car really would be best. And in this league, which is one of the most important in our market, is not short of notable contenders – the Ford Mondeo, Mazda 6, Nissan Teana and Honda Accord are all executive sedan we’re all pretty much familiar with. But you must be wondering how come the Audi A4 won in this category, despite the premium it has over the rest of the competitor, right?

The car’s technical aspect is a good start. With a 1,798cc turbocharged engine mated to an 8-speed CVT gearbox (yes, eight!), the A4 is good enough for 160bhp. And then considering the 1,410kg kerb weight of the car, the nought to hundred timing of 8.6 seconds is something to shout about. Not forgetting its pliancy and good handling too. Inside, the A4 is endowed with a very spacious cabin AND a very spacious boot. Obviously, “very spacious” was the keyword Audi’s boffins were holding on to when coming out with the car’s interior.

As a whole, it delivers sophistication, is inviting and also refined – showing something to the pricier C-Class and 3 Series. And all that leads to good value for money…

Performance Car of the Year

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X GSR SST 2.0

A technological marvel packed in one mean looking package - that is what the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is all about. Then plant in a newly redesigned engine and transmission, the new Evolution X is readily equipped to face a new era of competitors, namely the Subaru Impreza WRX STI which it beat in this award to clinch the winner in the performance car segment.

With improved traction and control (all thanks to the new Super-All Wheel Control software monitoring steering response, torque and braking force), new turbocharged engine that packs a whopping 422Nm of torque, 280bhp of power and a new Twin-Clutch transmission that parallels Volkswagen’s DSG, this new Evolution ups the ante on driving performance.

This is a truly magnificent beast that deserves to win in the sports car category for 2008.
