Stepping inside and The drive

The muscular 225hp (as compared to the 2.0i’s 148hp)...makes overtaking and filling gaps in traffic a cinch.

Our test car’s seats were clad in a combination of black leather and fabric. I was expecting an all-leather affair, but I suppose Subaru decided this was the more “sporting” option. The seats are pretty comfy though - no complaints here.

The GT’s instrument cluster is the same as the one on the 2.0i we tested earlier, with the addition of an ECO Meter. What the ECO mode does is it basically lets you know whether you’re (a) driving to save fuel (b) or driving to have fun. The GT also comes with dual-zone digital climate control.

When you’re on a long journey in a fully loaded car, the environment can seem stifling after a while. Thanks to the panoramic glass roof which is absent in the 2.0i however, the interior can be given an airy feel simply at the touch of a switch. The glass roof can probably even distract fidgety toddlers by giving them something else to wonder at.

One shortcoming we discovered was the lack of actual rear air vents. What Subaru did was to place a wide vent at the top of the dashboard that blows cool air along the roof towards the last row of seats, and call it “Sky air-conditioning”. It sounds impressive in theory, but in reality, it does take a while to cool the entire cabin. Hence, parking under the shade is imperative in this car.

The image of a fully loaded MPV struggling to keep pace with everyone else on the expressway is one of the main reasons why petrol-heads aren’t keen on them. But in the Exiga GT, this stereotype is banished. For good.

The muscular 225hp (as compared to the 2.0i’s 148hp) that comes from the turbocharged 2.0-litre boxer engine makes overtaking and filling gaps in traffic a cinch. Turbo lag is still present, but only momentarily. Get the smooth revving boxer to 3,000rpm, let the turbo kick in, and feel the Exiga surge forward - this particular engine was specially developed for the Exiga, and has a new turbocharger bolted on. It won’t quite scare you, but it will put a grin on your face every time.
