Compact estates don’t come more desirable and stylish than this

Audi A4 Avant

Estates or station wagons are hardly popular over here.

Although they are usually stereotyped as being utilitarian by most car buyers here, things are quite different over in Europe, where estates are considered as lifestyle accessories that are more practical than their saloon siblings. In some European markets, the estate model even outsells its saloon equivalent.

One of the most popular estates in Europe is the Audi A4 Avant. The station wagon from Ingolstadt has arrived on our shores, but is it convincing enough to tempt the Singaporean car buyer away from the traditional three-box saloon?

The latest generation A4 Avant is based on the latest A4 saloon model, and hence shares the latter’s body panels right up to the B-pillar. But things start to get different from the four-door model as you go towards the rear. The roof is more curvaceous, while the sloping tailgate gives it a similar profile to the A3 Sportback. The latter is a stark contrast to the previous generation model’s more upright tailgate.

All in all, the A4 Avant cuts a more elegant profile than the more business-like saloon model. The Avant’s swooping curves give it a purposeful and somewhat sporty stance as well.

The Avant’s cargo area will hold up to 490-litres of cargo with the rear seats in place. Surprisingly, this volume is barely 10-litres more than the saloon’s boot. But the Avant shows its practicality and spaciousness over the saloon when the rear seats are folded away – creating a maximum load volume of 1,430-litres.

With minimal wheel arch intrusions, the load area is well shaped – it will gobble up golf bags easily and possibly a mountain bike (with its front wheel removed). Moreover, the loading lip is nicely placed at bumper level for easier loading and unloading. Also standard within the Avant’s boot are intelligent solutions such as a reversible cargo floor, a separator net and a convenient tonneau cover for the cargo area. Disappointingly though, the A4 Avant doesn’t possess the A6 Avant’s clever load floor divider.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
