The beautiful one

Looking for a genre-busting car without a fat price tag? Ahh...then this is the one

There are uncanny cues of the Phaeton and Passat, but even so, it still has its own identity

“Here they come, the beautiful ones
The beautiful ones
The beautiful ones
La la la la la…”

Remember that song? Circa 1996 by Brit rock band, Suede? That song was a mega hit not only in the U.K, but even here locally.

Apparently, you can also apply those lyrics to describe a car. And the last time I had that song ringing in my head was when I test drove the Mercedes-Benz CLS350 four years ago. You see, it had svelte lines that gave it such a prominent silhouette – so much so you can deem it a “sedan”, or quite willingly, a “coupe” even. After all, that was the design concept of the CLS – a sedan with the profile of a coupe.

Blame it on my quirky taste, but I was very much in love with that car. And I don’t understand just why on earth people would rather go for a conventional S-Class, when a CLS would do a better job of wafting around in style. Oh well, buyer sentiment differs after all, and in a market like ours where buyers prefer sticking to the norm, the rather small number of CLS running on our roads, well, ain’t a surprise.

Then just last year came the BMW X6. Well it has the same basic virtues as the CLS, albeit in the proportion of an SUV. It’s a case of “acquired taste”, and locally, it still didn’t garner as much interest as its X5 sibling. Which is a pity, as that particular car was a joy to drive and as a whole, felt very much car-like.

And this year, it is Volkswagen’s turn to wow the local crowd – by introducing their version of a “sedan in a coupe’s skin”, the Passat CC. There are cues of the CLS undoubtedly, but Volkswagen still deserves the credit for daring to come up with such an attempt.

It will be a good conversation starter and an attention-grabber for sure – but what else lies beneath that good looks?

There are uncanny cues of the Phaeton and Passat, but even so, it still has its own identity.

Although it sits on the Passat’s platform, it still is lower and dimensionally, larger. Flowing lines from the front bumper that ends aptly towards the boot exudes a sense of style you rarely see, even on a coupe. The tail-lights are large, so you won’t even have a problem singling it out in a sea of boring sedans. While up front, the headlamps and grill gives you the sort of menacing look that will make others give you the right of way on the expressway.

The side mirrors are nicely-shaped, and although it looks small to most, manage to provide good side visions. 18-inch alloys shod with 235/40 R-18 tyres – which are cost options - add a further touch of style.
