Interior & Accommodation

We like being in the Koleos’ cabin, as it manages to be both modern and techy, and also cosy and inviting

Call it coincidence, déjà vu or Groundhog Day, but all three seem to have the same theme in there. Hmm…the chief designers of all three cars must have had the same idea when it comes to interior design – give it dark leather, and put some aluminium bits to give it a modern touch.

So how do we differentiate them apart since they are all the, err, same? Simple – by giving build quality and equipment list a closer look. That is how the Koleos outshines the rest of them.

The Koleos has the most modern looking interior, with everything well laid out. Undeniably, you can just know it has been given a designer’s touch. Just check out the dash - clean and uncluttered, every control is where it’s supposed to be and there isn’t a need to stretch your hands just to reach them. The dials look clean and smart, and the graphics resolution on the dash screen is one of the best we’ve ever encountered. Quality rates highly too, and you can just feel the solidity and robustness of the plastics used. I’m sure most of us faced this situation before – having to do multiple adjustments just to put the rear seats down, and load in all your barang-barang. Cumbersome, isn’t it? Well, that is not a problem in the Koleos, as Renault has provided a one-pull lever which allows users to fold the rear seats conveniently.

We like being in the Koleos’ cabin, as it manages to be both modern and techy, and also cosy and inviting – premium Bose sound system and rear air-con vents included. Five adults on a long haul trip up North shouldn’t be caught complaining. After all, it has the longest wheelbase here.

From a design perspective, the CR-V is undeniably Japanese with everything being safe and idiot-proof. The centre console seems to be the centre focus, as everything you’ll ever need is smacked there, even the gear shifters. Undeniably, the high quality plastic and substantial leather puts it close to the Koleos. But unlike the Koleos, it doesn’t have the car-like feel and its driving position is almost van-like - generally ok if you’re the sort who likes to perch tall while driving. The CR-V has the smallest width here, and we can foresee passengers rubbing shoulders with each other very often.

Spend time in the RAV4 and you can readily persuade yourself that you might be in a far larger, even dearer SUV. The RAV4’s interior looks fresher than the CR-V’s and is finished pretty well. Strangely though, it also has the most cheap bits in the cabin. For example, the signal and wiper stalk looks familiar (I can recall seeing them on the Wish and Picnic MPV) and a missing digital air-con is a question mark. If you can find them in both the Koleos and CR-V, we don’t quite understand why it’s missing here. Ok, so Toyota still deserves some credit for providing an expensive audio head-unit that also doubles up as a reverse camera. And if you’re regularly transporting adults in the back, this is the one.

The CR-V’s boot opens upwards, the RAV4 sideways, and the Koleos with a split tail-gate. While there are no fault with the CR-V and RAV4, the Koleos appeals to my other fellow assistants as collectively, they find it a unique touch – after all, you don’t have to worry much about “whether I can open the boot” especially when the car behind chose to park itself closely.

Equipment wise, the RAV4 is the only one that’s missing out on Xenon lights when those are standard fitment on the CR-V and Koleos. Not only that, the RAV4 is also four airbags short – while the CR-V and Koleos have six each.
