...tell me quattro, quattro, quattro

Audi Q5

The roofline which slopes towards the hindquarters is particularly coupe-like - even the window's shape is reminiscent of a low, swoopy sports car.

When we first got our hands on the Q5 at its regional launch last month, we came away quite impressed. Audi's SUV-cum-coupe proved itself to be quite the crossover, ably marrying off-road ability with superb on-road performance. That's saying a lot, considering that we're not exactly SUV fans.

Naturally, we wanted to experience the Q5 here on Singapore roads. From the tighter confines of our car parks, to the relatively short expressway runs which are inevitably marred by rush hour traffic, resulting in stop & go driving - it's these conditions that we wanted to subject the Q5 to.

And lest we forget to mention, we also wanted to pit the Q5's quattro system against the monsoon rains - something which we didn't get the chance to do during the KL launch.

The looks

By and large, the Q5's most expressive feature has to be those headlamps surrounding the trapezoid-shaped, single-frame egg crate grille. Stare at them long enough and you get the feeling that you're looking into a pair of eyes that belong to a very aggressive creature that's been stalking you. Combined with those daytime LED running lamps, it's sort of like holding the gaze of a sexy woman with smoldering eyes.

There's even certain swankiness to the fog lamps set within a honeycomb mesh (or is it just their chrome surrounds?). Either way, the front facade does look sleek, and is a dead ringer for this SUV's A5 sibling.

As you move down the Q5's flanks, you'll notice that the car's shut lines are quite tight, indicating the precision that went into its assembly. The roofline which slopes towards the hindquarters is particularly coupe-like - even the window's shape is reminiscent of a low, swoopy sports car. And with its 1,653mm height, the Q5 is pretty low-slung for an SUV - it has the shortest height in its class.

As mentioned in our overseas Road Test, the Q7's DNA is evident in the Q5's rear. The LED-combination tail lamps found on the wrap-around rear hatch are good complements to the car's overall look.

The icing on the cake has to be those gorgeous 20-inch rims that came wrapped in 255/45 series Michelin Latitude rubbers. The Q5 may possess off-road ability, but having that combination signals the Q5's readiness to conquer the tarmac as well.
