Technically speaking

I don't know about you, but the Scirocco seems to have it better than the Golf GTI.

Powered by Volkswagen's 1,984cc force-fed TSI engine, the Scirocco is good for a maximum 200 horses and 280Nm of torque, figures similar to the Golf GTI. Mated to the powerplant is a quick-shifting 6-speed DSG ‘box, resulting in a century sprint timing of 7.1 seconds. Maximum speed has been capped at 233km/h.

So what do all these figures spell out? F-U-N, and a bucket full of it.

You can leave it in "D" and drive it regularly, but switch over to "S" mode to enjoy more driving character. Gears 1, 2 and 3 will hold on all the way to the redline, allowing you to discover and appreciate the maximum potential of this drivetrain as you give it a good wallop - and you just have to love the accompanying exhaust note which sounds more bassy than what was heard in the Golf GTI.

I bet there are Puritans out there scoffing and saying "nothing beats a manual", right? Well, that's where the tiptronic comes in - via the steering-mounted paddle shifters or gear selector itself, you can still drive it like any other manual, only sans the clutch pedal. Response from the time you choose the gear to the moment it engages is spot-on, true to the sporting intent of the Scirocco. I don't know about you, but the Scirocco seems to have it better than the Golf GTI.

The same has to be said about its handling. Despite being built on the same platform as the Golf GTI, the Scirocco is 40mm longer, 51mm wider, 97mm lower and 10kg lighter. It also gets a rear track that's 60mm more. At this point, you should already notice from the numbers that Volkswagen places a strong emphasis on handling for the Scirocco. Oh, before I forget, it also comes with an "Adaptive Chassis Control" which lets you swap between "Comfort" or "Sport".

Result? A car that - I can safely say - handles like nothing else. To the extent, it's giving BMW something to think about.

Engage "Sport", and you should go look for a series of bends to immediately realize how the Scirocco handles in a lithe manner. You can enter ferociously, stick to the cornering line, accelerate hard out of it and still maintain good composure.

In "Comfort", the Scirocco proves to be a rewarding car to be in - road undulations are easily ironed out, and it isn't bone-jarringly hard, contrary to most sports coupe available in our market. Left to run on its own, the car has good body control - (a) body-roll is almost non-existent, (b) suspension is properly balanced between outright grip and comfort and (c) uneven roads are easily tackled with aplomb.

Brakes are equally bitey, and there's a good amount of feel to make it easier to modulate. Somehow, there's that strong GTI aspiration...
