Volkswagen Polo 1.4 Review
Do you Polo?

Story & pictures by M.H Sim, reporting from Sardinia, Italy

The winding B-roads that snake along steep coastal cliffs and mountainous rock formations make Oblia the perfect setting to unleash the all-new Volkswagen Polo to the rest of the world

Volkswagen Polo

Just south of the Italian mainland lies Sardinia, an island that's imbrued with various flavours from the Mediterranean-like architecture, to its tropical flora and fauna.

Oblia is a coastal town that's set in the northern reaches of Sardinia, and this is the very same place that Volkswagen has chosen to let motoring journalists from around the world sample not only the world famous Italian cuisine, but also their new Polo.

Stepping off the plane, I was immediately ushered to the Volkswagen communications booth, where a battalion of Polo(s) were already parked and waiting for us. A short briefing from the VW officials, and the whole lot of us were off to collect our respective cars.

Sizing up the new Polo is easy - to start off, banish all thoughts of it as the Golf's smaller-and-less-endowed-sibling aside, as the new car is almost as big as the Golf Mark IV. Yes, it's larger than its predecessor in every single way.

For those who want the numbers, check this out - it's 54mm longer, 32mm wider, 14mm lower and backed up with an equally broad track to give the Polo (a) a more substantial poise, and (b) a beefier stance.

Sold my car withing a few days. Fast process. However, be ready for dealers to slash price saying need to change tyre, need to repaint, etc during viewing.
