Did Proton get it right for their first MPV?

Proton Exora

Funny. Proton produces an MPV. No, I'm not taking a stab at Proton, but it's just unlikely to hear Proton come up with an MPV. Before this, Proton has - domestically and in Singapore - been known to churn out only sedans and hatchbacks for the mass market to compete with the Japanese and Koreans.

In fact, an MPV is what Proton should have produced long ago - after all, it should appeal to its domestic market and do well.

Before the major shake-up within Proton's management, the company seem to be unsure and directionless. While other manufacturers are constantly revamping and improving its model line-up, Proton remained stagnant, contented only with its Saga and Wira, and then reviving it over and over again with facelifts that seem redundant. The arrival of the Gen 2 and Waja didn't help much either - it got rampant criticism, largely for the questionable quality.

Thankfully, things got better after the changes in management. Case in point - the Savvy small hatch, Satria Neo three-door hatch, Persona family sedan and all new Saga small sedan that showed how potentially serious they are as a manufacturer. Not forgetting the expansion of its performance arm, R3.

And now comes the company's first ever MPV - the Exora. This will be the car that will make or break Proton's attempt in the MPV market, as it's an all-important segment after the family sedan.

For our market, the Exora seem to be in for a tough fight. It will have to go against the favourite Honda Stream, Toyota Wish and to an extent, the Kia Carens Elite. Does it have what it takes then?
