The Audi S5 gets a new engine and loses its roof. Is the Cabriolet version every bit as good as its fixed roof cousin?

Che bella!

I pulled into a gas station forecourt in the new Audi S5 Cabriolet the other day and a guy came up to admire the car, snapped a photo with his phone and I swore I heard him mutter to himself as he was looking at the car, “Beautiful, what a beautiful car!” An overwhelming endorsement  for the S5 Cabriolet when it comes to the way it looks then.

The S5 Cabriolet is obviously the topless convertible version of the S5 two-door coupe. The coupe itself is a really beautiful car. The famed Italian designer of the A5 coupe, which the S5 is based on, Walter de Silva described it as the most beautiful car he has ever penned. This is the guy that gave us timeless classics like the Alfa Romeo 156 and 147 as well as Audi’s very own R8.

In order not to compromise the coupe’s svelte and evocative lines, Audi decided to employ a traditional canvas roof the the drop top version instead of the increasing popular metal hard top. The latter adds weight and takes up space when folded away hence the ungainly, fat backside that can be witnessed in some models with such a roof arrangement. Moreover, Audi says that the traditional canvas roof is part of the whole cabriolet/convertible motoring experience.

To distinguish the S5 from the base A5 Cabriolet 2.0 TFSI quattro model , it has been adorned with similarly styled go faster bits as other S models. This includes the deeper front bumper, silver-grey  egg crate style inserts in the radiator grille, aluminium look wing mirror covers, 19-inch double spoke alloys, quad exhaust outlets, subtle boot lid spoiler and so on. The go faster bits give the S5 a more aggressive and purposeful stance over the standard A5 Cabriolet.

I’m sure you’d have to agree with me that Audi’s latest topless model  looks nothing short of gorgeous when viewed from any angle. Audi’ decision to utilize a fabric roof instead of a bulky metal one is certainly the right one. Just look at the S5 Cabriolet's petite rear end – it looks just proportionate compared to those convertible models with a folding metal roof. Roof up, the S5 Cabriolet retains the coupe’s elegant lines and sexy side profile. This is just simply a good looking car – roof up or down.  The BMW 3 Series convertible is by no means a bad looking car but the S5 Cabriolet will surely trump it in the style department when you put them side by side.
