The BMW 3 Series coupe is one of the most established premium two-door models out there but it has faced fierce competition in recent times thanks to the sexy Audi A5. The two-door Bavarian now has another new competitor to contend with in the form of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe. The demise of the CLK signals the reentry of a new coupe based on the latest generation E-Class.
Mercedes-Benz offered a string of iconic coupes based on E-Class saloon models in the past. The last time Stuttgart had an E-Class derived coupe model was with the W124 CE model from the late 1980s to early 1990s.
Style is of utmost importance when it comes to coupes. It doesn’t matter what badge it has or how cramped it is inside; the coupe just has to ooze style and be able to strike a pose. At first glance, the new two-door Merc certainly has the style to make the cut.
The new two-door Merc might share its basic styling with the regular and ubiquitous E-Class saloon but details like the heavily sculpted rear wheel arches and the swooping roof line gives it an aura of class and elegance the sedan doesn’t have. There are also strong hints of the brute and ostentatious CL’s styling on the smaller coupe.
Like Mercedes’ other coupe and roadster models, the E-Class coupe has its three-pointed star emblem on the radiator grille instead of sitting proudly on the bonnet. Another unique design touch are the lack of B-pillars, giving the cabin an open, airy feel, a feature that is carried over from the CLK and CL-Class. Like Avantgarde variants of the saloon, the coupe features the boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights on the front bumper, while the tail lamps feature more LED bulbs. Compared to say, the 3 Series Coupe, the E-Class coupe is definitely the classier looking car.
The E-Class coupe range kicks off with the four-cylinder E250 CGI BlueEfficiency and is topped off by the V8 powered E500 – there’s no news of a E63 AMG coupe yet so far. The mid-range model is the V6-powered E350, the variant test driven here.
As its moniker suggests, the E350 coupe is powered by Mercedes’ commonly used 3498cc V6 lump that also powers the saloon and models like the R350, ML350 and C350. With 272bhp on tap, this motor isn’t as powerful as the direct injection 3.5 V6 in recently facelifted roadster models like the SLK350 and the SL350, which is a tad disappointing to say the least. Still, the 272 German horses are enough to propel the E350 from rest to three figure speeds in 6.4 seconds, a reasonably quick time in the class. Like the saloon, top speed for the E350 coupe is electronically limited to 250km/h.
