5 for fighting

The Toyota Wish has always had its own way in the MPV market thanks to its unprecedented popularity. We find out if the capable Mazda5 has got what it takes to challenge the second generation Wish’s supremacy.

Wish upon a star

If you’re thinking about buying a mid-sized MPV in recent times, the chances of a Toyota Wish on your shortlist will be pretty high. The Wish has of course been the most popular mid-sized MPV in recent times. This was not to be expected by many as the Wish was only available from unofficial channels – the grey importers. There are perceptions by some after all, that parallel importers are not able to give that peace of mind feeling that an authorized distributor can.

Things were different from late last year though, as the Wish was finally made available officially from Borneo Motors, the official Toyota distributor here. Well, the Wish might make its official debut rather late here but late is certainly better than never.

It was the same situation with the second generation Wish. As soon as it was launched in its native Japan earlier this year, the parallel importers jumped into the bandwagon immediately and started to offer the new model to local MPV buyers. Borneo Motors recently joined in the fray and introduced the officially imported Wish.

Popular the Wish may be but there are still some out there who wish to seek an alternative mid-sized MPV. One of these models is the Honda Stream, but the new Wish’s larger dimensions and engine means a MPV like the Mazda5 is closer in competition.

The Wish’s popularity is undoubted so let’s see how the underdog Mazda fares against the Toyota in this David versus Goliath twin test.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
