Porsche Panamera 4S PDK Review
Porsche's Panache

911 purists might loathe the idea but the four-door Panamera is here to stay.

No compromise

Porsche purists should stop reading this review. How about picking up a copy of a magazine dedicated to classic 911s? Well, because there's nothing very "Porsche" about the Panamera. You see, for starters, this review is about a Porsche with four doors. And if that isn't a turn-off already, this car's got its engine upfront, direct fuel injected, liquid-cooled and it's not in a Boxer configuration.

The last time Porsche did something like that was in the form of a brutish SUV called the Cayenne. Purists bemoaned at the idea and wished for its quick doom. But they were wrong. The Cayenne turned out to be Porsche's best-seller today.

The bigwigs at Porsche knew they were on to something. Now enter the Panamera. It's the sports sedan that is chipping away at Maserati Quattroporte's lonely dominance in the four-door grand tourer category. Some argue that the likes of BMW's M5, Jaguar's XFR or Merc's E63 are part of the same crowd. They probably are missing the whole point. Not even the AMG CLS63 would be an accurate comparison. Like the Maser, the Porker didn't start its life as a garden variety sedan then shoehorned with a big-block engine. In fact, the Panamera adopts a sequence quite the opposite. It was designed from the ground up to be an entirely new car, launched with the most powerful variants first - V8 engine blown and naturally aspirated - followed by a V6, hybrid and a rumoured diesel version to follow.

As we await the more "affordable" V6 version to arrive, we have to contend with "just" three versions:
•    Rear-wheel driven Panamera S with a 4.8L V8 engine;
•    the Four-wheel driven 4S powered by the same engine; and
•    A range-topping twin-turbo variant unimaginatively called the "Turbo".
