The looks are largely familiar but this new 911 Turbo packs a bigger punch than its predecessor.

There are some who might say that Porsche's designers are the laziest of any car maker's out there. After all, it truly takes an anorak to differentiate a facelift Porsche model from the old or a new generation variant from its predecessor. But I dare to beg to differ though. Take the 911 as an example, the designers and stylists have done a tremendous job of modernizing the look and feel of a car that actually first appeared way back in 1963.

Through its 47-year history, the 911's overall look and silhouette have hardly ever changed but Porsche's bright and brilliant engineers have managed to improve the bits underneath with each successive new variant or generation. The latest version of the 911 Turbo is no different - it looks are largely similar as before but beneath that sheet metal are many new technologies like a twin clutch gearbox and a new engine with direct injection and more importantly, more power.

The new model is still part of the 997 generation of 911s. Its looks are largely similar to earlier 997 Turbos and only an anorak can differentiate the new from the old. The new bits on the new car's exterior include new daytime running lights in place of the fog lamps on the slightly reworked front bumper, new wing mirrors, reshaped LED tail lamps and new alloy wheels. The changes are once again subtle but new details like the LED lights front and rear do bring the Turbo bring up to date with its closest German rivals. As previously, the new Turbo is available in both coupe and Cabriolet body styles.

The biggest news for the new model is obviously the new PDK double clutch gearbox that first made its debut in lesser 911s in 2008 and the first completely new engine in a Turbo since the inception of the first generation in 1974.
