The updated entry level Mercedes saloon gets a grilling from the Audi A4. Let's find out how does the Stuttgart machine stack up against its country mate from Ingolstadt.

Vitamin C

Base models might not be as powerful or as well equipped as top of the range ones but they're usually the more popular among the buying crowd here thanks to their more affordable price tags.

The current generation Mercedes-Benz C-Class is proving to be a hit with compact executive buyers over here judging the way it is eating into the BMW 3 Series' fat pie. Outwardly, the C-Class is a good looking and well proportioned car. The S- and CL-Class inspired looks are refreshing for a petite and compact Mercedes saloon. The most affordable C-Class model is the C180.

While the C-Class biggest rival has always been the BMW 3 Series, there is an ever increasing threat from Audi with its A4. After all, the Four Rings has overtaken the Three-pointed Star as the biggest selling premium brand in Europe and is the fastest growing brand among its competitors here. The base C180's closest A4 rival is obviously the base 1.8 TFSI variant.

When it was first launched, the base C180 had a 1.8-litre Kpmpressor supercharged motor with 156bhp. Last year the 1.8-litre unit was swapped for a 1.6-litre supercharged four pot with a similar 156 horses and the C180 Kompressor took on the BlueEFFICIENCY name plate. Recently, the base four-cylinder C-Class model was again updated with a new turbocharged motor instead of a supercharged unit, hence the new CGI name plate instead of the old Kompressor moniker. In addition to the C180 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY, the C200 Kompressor also swaps its motor for turbo power and becomes the C200 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY.

The 1796cc turbocharged four pot in the new C180 CGI is shared with the E200 CGI, E250 CGI and the C200 CGI models, albeit tuned for less power for this base spec model. Like the old supercharged 1.8 and the last 1.6 unit, the engine makes a convincing 156bhp at 5200rpm. Despite the same power output as in the old model, Mercedes quotes a 0-100km/h time of 9 seconds for the C180 CGI, a full nine-tenths quicker than the previous supercharged C180. Top speed for the CGI model is 220km/h, which is similar as before.
