The Right Stuff

Ford's RS name makes a local comeback after a long hiatus. Is the new Focus RS good enough to carry the Rallye Sport torch?

There are many reasons out there to love hot hatches. They make the perfect performance cars for beginners - you can easily exploit your driving competence in a quick and taut handling hot hatch. The hot hatch is also a practical performance car. It has the practicalities of a family hatchback while providing fire-breathing performance. Thanks to big wheels and go-faster add-ons on the outside, a hot hatch can be made to be even as desirable as Scarlett Johanssan to petrol heads.

About 150bhp used to be the norm among hot hatches in the past as they are usually small, light and pretty nimble. Not so anymore it seems, just like the power struggle between NATO and the Warsaw Pack back during the Cold War, car manufacturers seem to be trying to outdo each other when it comes to the power stakes in their hot hatches.

Just when you thought that the Volkswagen Golf R's 256bhp was plenty, how does the Ford Focus RS' 305bhp and 440Nm sound like to you? Mouth watering isn't it?

The Focus RS is the hottest Focus model available out there and on paper, it has all the right bits - 305bhp, 0-100km/h in less than 6 seconds, 250km/h top whack and renowned dynamics from Ford. The RS was developed by the Blue Oval's TeamRS led by chassis guru Jost Capito, the same people who honed Hirvonen's Focus World Rally machine.

Any boy racer or driving enthusiast will go gaga and drool over the RS' looks. On the outside, the RS gets more than the usual hot hatch add-ons to distinct it from lesser Focus models. While the last Focus RS looked a tad tame on the outside, this one's as loud a RS can ever be. With its fins and gloss black finish, the large WRC inspired rear spoiler catches your eyes at first but the rest of the RS' exterior isn't exactly tame either - the heavily flared wheel arches hide the wider track and big 19-inch wheels while the front air intakes accented in gloss black feed much needed cold air to the intercooler. There are cooling louvres on the bonnet that look like those on the Sierra Cossie while the rear is finished off by a deep bumper with an under floor diffuser in gloss black as well as twin exhaust tips that are the size of Coke cans. There are also deeper side skirts along the flanks. There are no less than eight reminders that this is an RS on the outside of the car including those on the rally inspired multi-spoke wheels.
