Nissan 370Z Roadster Review

Story and Photos by Raymond Lai

With the 370Z Roadster, you can enjoy open motoring without the loss of the coupe's fun factor

Z marks the sport

When it comes to open top sports cars, the Mazda MX-5 immediately comes to mind at the more affordable end of the market while at the upper end, models like the Porsche Boxster and BMW Z4 reign supreme. Then there's the Roadster version of the Nissan Z. it sits below the base Boxster and Z4 models in terms of price and image but offers more performance.

Nissan always had a topless version of its z coupe since the Z31 300ZX model in the 1990s. The 300ZX Convertible was superseded by the Z33 350Z Roadster in 2005. A year after the latest Z34 sixth generation Z car made its debut, the topless 370Z Roadster is launched.

The chop top 370Z looks even better than the slightly dumpy looking coupe model. Top down, the fabric roof stows completely underneath a metal cover in front of the boot lid. The roof is operated by just a press of a button on the centre console but disappointingly, the motors and hydraulics are rather noisy when they're doing their jobs or retracting or closing the roof. Unlike topless Audis or the Porsche Boxster, the 370Z Roadster's roof can't be operated on the move, which can be quite an inconvenience in our fickle climate these days.

Top up or down, the Roadster looks well proportioned and purposeful. The Z's long bonnet design is further accentuated on this Roadster model due to the short rear deck, which in turn gives it a Speedster look.
