Mitsubishi ASX 2.0 6-CVT Review
Taking it softly

The new Mitsubishi ASX may have SUV looks but in fact, it's more family hatchback in the way it drives.

The soft approach

SUVs can generally be categorized into two kinds - hardcore ones that can really go off-road and crossover types that have the rugged SUV look but lack the capability to tackle any kind of terrain other than the urban jungle. The new Mitsubishi ASX is one that falls into the latter category.

The ASX, or the Active Sports Crossover to name it in full is conceived as an urban type crossover to give buyers an alternative to the traditional hatchback in the form of a similarly sized five-door model with SUV looks and driving position, a bit of a pseudo SUV so to speak. Nissan has proved that this concept could work with the Qashqai so obviously other manufacturers want a slice of Nissan's pie; hence Mitsubishi with the ASX or the RVR as it is known in Japan. The ASX can be considered as the spiritual successor to the original Space Wagon based RVR and the Airtrek wagon/SUV crossover.

In terms of looks, the ASX certainly makes the cut as a hatchback/SUV crossover. Based on 2007's Concept cX concept vehicle, the styling starts off with Mitsubishi's ‘jet fighter grille' corporate face as witnessed on the Lancer EX and the facelifted Outlander

Along the sides, the rising belt line gives it some character while the rear features a variation of the Lancer EX's slim tail lamps. There are no SUV inspired details to be found anywhere like unpainted plastic mouldings around the wheel arches and bumpers. The ASX's proportions are rather similar to that of its closest competitors like the Nissan Qashqai and the Hyundai Tucson among other models. The ASX's front and rear overhangs prove that it is not made to do any hill climbing while the ride height is significantly higher than a standard hatchback like a Golf, it isn't as generous as say, a Land Rover Feelander 2. All in all though, the ASX cuts a very smart and neat look that should appeal to both urbanites and rugged types.
