Renault Megane Coupe-Cabriolet 2.0, Peugeot 308 CC 1.6 Review

Look no further then these two if you are looking for a four-seater convertible with a dose of French style.

While the concept of a convertible with a retractable hardtop was first conceived way back in the 1930s by Peugeot, it was the 206CC from the French manufacturer that introduced the concept of the coupe convertible to the masses more than a decade ago.

The success of the 206CC was quickly followed by its larger brother, the 307CC. The latter replicated the formula of the smaller model whilst offering more space and practicality. The 308CC superseded the 307CC last year. The newer model offers the same formula as its predecessor but offers a more contemporary style and a plusher cabin among other improvements.

Less than half a year after it made its local debut, Peugeot has mildly updated the larger of its two coupe convertible models. The 2010 MY 308CC features a new gearbox as well as more power from its turbocharged motor.

While there are many other mid-sized four-seater coupe convertibles in the market, only one other comes from France. The Renault Megane CC has been around since 2004 - that's over six years ago, which is an eternity for a car. Throughout its life, the Megane CC was mildly updated only once a few years ago. Despite its age and the imminent launch of a new model though, the topless Megane offers a reasonably priced hardtop convertible with a dose of French flair, which sounds rather very much like the Pug 308CC then.

As its name suggests the 308CC is the coupe-convertible version of the 308 hatchback. The overall styling is a combination of the 308 as well as its 307CC predecessor. Peugeot's styling gurus have gone for the evolutionary route rather than revolutionary. The 308CC's nose is especially distinctive thanks the trademark gaping radiator grille. The rear is no less distinctive thanks to uniquely shaped LED tail lamps and a more proportioned rump than previously while the use of chrome strips on the window surrounds give the 308CC a classy feel. Roof up or down, the 308CC is a far better looking machine than its 307CC predecessor. The updated car here offers no changes from the version it supersedes so you won't be able to tell from the outside that this is the newer model.

Parked next to the Pug, the Megane CC does start to show its age with its less flowing looks. On its own though, the Renault looks contemporary enough despite a rear that is less compact than the Pug's. For sheer style and elegance though, the Pug certainly wins the day from the Renault. The latter looks more functional so to speak.
