They say that racing improves the breed or at least that’s the marketing jargon that manufacturers would have you believe. In truth however, much of the R&D that goes into improving lap times usually don’t make it to the road. Nevertheless, the racing experience does give manufacturers an edge in producing reliable everyday performance cars.
The hot hatch segment has always been well received everywhere. It’s a simple recipe, take a small to medium sized hatchback, toss in a powerful 2.0-litre turbo, sort out the handling and you’ve got a winner. Although the true litmus test is the width of your smile as you toss the hatch from bend to bend.
And on this day, pearly whites are beaming. Being given the keys to two of the hottest hatches available right now does have that effect.
Ford has a heritage steeped in the World Rally Championships. So it’s only natural that I would have high hopes for the ST even if it has lost a cylinder since the last generation. But that’s not to say all is lost with the Renault. And with all of Renault’s F1 experience, this comparison is not getting any easier. Considering our numerous experience in the RS, the ST is gonna have to pull out something huge from its bag of tricks to sway us over to the blue oval.
