As requested by you, the readers of oneshift, we pit the base E-Class coupe against the entry level Audi A5. Which coupe will come up tops then? Read on.

Pretty faces

The current generation BMW 3 Series Coupe has had things on its own in the premium mid-sized coupe sector since it was introduced a few years back. Its closest competitor, the Mercedes-Benz CLK was an ageing model by then so it wasn't really a threat to the coupe from Munich.

Then came the pretender from Ingolstadt two years ago - the Audi A5's convincing breadth of talents made the BMW's comfortable position in the class not so comfortable after all. Mercedes-Benz are not just going to let its rivals fight it out on their own though. The demise of the CLK signals the reentry of a new coupe based on the latest generation E-Class last year. The last time Stuttgart had an E-Class derived coupe model was with the W124 CE model. This time though, the newer two-door model is simply called E-Class coupe.

Some readers wrote in to us recently requesting us to do a group test of the base Audi A5 against the E250 CGI coupe to find out which is the better German four-cylinder premium mid-sized coupe. Let's see how the E-Class Coupe fares against the desirable two-door Audi then.

Style is of utmost importance when it comes to coupes and these two are not short of it. The new two-door Merc might share its basic styling with the regular and ubiquitous E-Class saloon but details like the heavily sculpted rear wheel arches and the swooping roof line gives it an aura of class and elegance the sedan doesn't have. There are also strong hints of the brute and ostentatious CL's styling on the smaller coupe. Another unique design touch is the lack of B-pillars, giving the cabin an open, airy feel. Compared to say the 3 Series Coupe, the E-Class coupe is definitely the classier looking car.

The Audi A5 is no less bad looking than the Merc. You'd have to see this car in the flesh to appreciate its sheer beauty. The man who designed it cites it as the most beautiful car he's ever penned, and he is the man responsible for beautiful and timeless designs like the Alfa Romeo 156/147 and Audi models like the R8 among others.

The car's styling is derived from a previous concept study called the Nuvolari. The A5's look is a mix of the A4 as well as the TT. The influences from the latter are especially evident at the front. The sides feature neat creases and a tall window line. The Audi's relative width gives it a muscular and aggressive stance to compliment the car's overall elegance. The white A5 in the group pictures here is actually a 3.2 FSI model with the standard S line body kit as Audi was not able to provide us with a 2.0 TFSI on the day of the shoot but the detail shots are certainly from a 2.0 TFSI which we tested alongside the Merc on another occasion.
