Introduction, Exterior

When Mercedes-Benz first launched the CLS back in 2004, they weren't expecting it to spawn a whole new market segment that would inspire rivals to follow in the footsteps of their four door coupe design.

Once again, the German carmaker is taking yet another bold step in their design with the Shooting Brake. While Mercedes isn’t the first to venture into producing sport estates, it is however the first to incorporate elegant design and gorgeous lines into what is usually a utilitarian segment.

Shooting Brake in its strictest term originated from the British in the early 19th century as a term for a vehicle that carried the shooting equipment for gentleman hunters. In recent times however, high-end bespoke coachbuilders have adopted the term for their two door custom-built wagon style vehicles. An example would be the latest offering from Touring Superleggera that based their Shooting Brake on a Bentley Continental GTC.

Exterior

From the beginning, the CLS was always an exercise in bringing Mercedes-Benz elegant design concepts to the extreme. Despite being based on the E-class platform, the CLS appears much larger than its less illustrious sibling. Love it or hate it, the CLS arrests your eyes with its girth and sheer on road presence.

Personally, I think the CLS is brilliantly beautiful. A properly designed automobile should always have an exterior that appears as if a silk cloth has been draped over the hard points of the chassis. An impression that is further underlined by the matt colour applied on our test car.
