Less is more

The engine in the XC60 2.0T is Volvo's new 1999cc GTDi (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection) four-pot that we previously sampled in the soon-to-be-here new S60 in Portugal. With the new motor, Volvo says that it has succeeded in making a four-cylinder engine that is as powerful as a 2.5-litre five-cylinder but is yet more efficient. Like in the S60 2.0T, the unit makes 203bhp and 300Nm in the XC60.

Performance is reasonably good - a 0-100km/h time of 8.9 seconds and 205km/h (T6 - 7.3 seconds and 210km/h) is just slightly down on the more powerful Q5 2.0 TFSI's impressive numbers. The four-cylinder unit might not deliver performance that is as punchy as the 304bhp T6 can offer but it delivers real world go that is more easily useable and exploitable on our crowded roads. The engine is relatively lag free and pretty refined for a Volvo four-pot but the engine not is a bit flat and uninspiring.

Transmitting the power to the XC60's front wheels is Volvo's Powershift twin clutch gearbox. Like the Powershift units in the 2-litre C30 and S40 models that we have, the XC60's gearbox is tuned to feel like a more conventional torque converter automatic and smooth operation instead of lightning fast shift times. You'd be hard pressed to tell that the gearbox was a twin clutch unit rather than a torque converter automatic. Expectedly, the box offers a ‘+/-‘ manual mode but since it is such a smooth operator in ‘D' that it is better to leave it to its own devices rather than switch gears on your own.

Economy is a strong suit of the 2.0T/Powershift combination in the XC60. Volvo quotes an average fuel consumption figure of 8.5 litres per 100km or more than 10km per litre, which is an admirable number indeed for a SUV of this size. In comparison, the T6 offers a poorer average fuel consumption figure of 10.7 litres per 100km.

Like the rest of the Volvo range, the XC60's dynamics is best described as safe. The steering is precise enough but it lacks the weight and talkativeness of say, a BMW. The suspension has well-judged settings though, offering a good compromise between ride comfort and body control. The ride feels especially well damped and comfortable despite the 18-inch alloy wheels on the test car.

The 2.0T reemphasizes the point that the XC60 is more of an urban biased crossover rather than a full-blown off-roader - it does without the T6's Haldex AWD system, thus saving weight and cost while improving fuel economy. The engine's high torque characteristics though means the front wheels can spin if you're bad at modulating the throttle during standing starts on less than ideal surfaces.
