Porsche Cayman 2.7 PDK Review
All grown up...

Porsche doesn’t want you to know this but the best handling model in their line-up isn’t actually the 911. Much as I love the 50 year old Porsche 911 design, the drive layout isn’t exactly ideal. With the engine hanging behind the rear axle, it tends to create a pendulum effect when you go round a corner.

Thus explains the 911’s reputation for being a very unforgiving machine for newcomers. In the older models especially, once the rear snaps around, it is usually terminal and you will exit the corner tail first everytime. But the 911 design continues to endure because once you’ve mastered the car, you’ll be rewarded with tremendous mechanical grip from the engine hanging over the rear axle.

Porsche has spent the better part of the last 50 years ‘perfecting’ the 911 and it has resulted in some of the best handling modern day performance coupes with the 991 sitting proudly at the top.

Even with so much development poured into the rear engine design, you can’t change the fundamental laws of physics.

In 2005 when Porsche wanted to plug a market gap between the Boxster and the 911, they had unwittingly created one of the best mid-engined sports coupe of all time.
