Volkswagen Passat CC 2.0 TSI Review
Four Play

One of the most stylish four door saloons has just been instilled with more substance. We find out how much the Volkswagen Passat CC 2.0 TSI has improved.

Style machine

The CLS has been an unprecedented success for Mercedes-Benz since it's launch more than six years ago. The recipe for the CLS was relatively simple and straightforward, really - take the E-Class, give it some curves, a more slippery silhouette and last but not least, reduce the seating capacity from five to four and you'll get the CLS. Quite why we had to wait almost half a decade later before another manufacturer shamelessly replicates the CLS' winning formula is beyond my understanding.

The manufacturer I'm talking about is of course Volkswagen with its CLS clone, the Passat CC. The CC or Comfort Coupe in VW-speak was launched here last year and has the same formula as the CLS - take a four-door saloon, this time the Passat, sex it up, give it a fancy name and you get a CC.

Volkswagen has recently updated the Passat CC range. In response to many requests by its customers for even greater utility and practicality, Volkswagen has offered the CC with a new rear bench that seat three instead of just two, thus increasing the CC's seating capacity from four to five. This new five seat layout is available with all three Passat CC variants but those who'd prefer the four seat version will be happy that it is also available to order.

Compared to a ‘normal' Passat, the CC looks stunning indeed. The Passat's roots are obvious up front due to the oversized chrome grille and teardrop headlamps but the CC's extra 36mm in width and the ‘hump' on the bonnet gives it a more thrusting look than its saloon sibling.

The CC looks best from the flanks though. At 4796mm in length, it is just 31mm longer than the Passat but the long overhangs, that distinctive feature line that runs below the window line and curvaceous roof line with that graceful C-pillar treatment emphasizes its size and give the CC a purposeful and assertive stance. To justify its coupe moniker, the CC's doors are frameless for an even sportier feel. Volkswagen has hit the right spot with the CC's styling - there's just a feeling of cohesiveness about it's design. The updated models look no different from the old versions but the 2.0 TSI comes with bigger 18-inch Daytona wheels that are different in design to the ones on the car photographed here.
