Volvo S80 2.0T Luxe Review
Common Cents

The second generation S80 finally gets a tax friendly 2-litre motor. Raymond Lai finds out if it is any good.

Cents and sensibility

Launched four years ago, the second generation Volvo S80 offered executive car buyers a strong alternative to more established models like the BMW 5 Series thanks to its sleek styling inside and out, safety features and other aspects.

Despite its wide range of capabilities though, the S80 have never managed to match or let alone surpass 5 Series sales. This could probably be down to the lack of tax friendly engine options in the S80 range. The S80 was initially launched with a 3.2-litre motor, hardly the right engine size for our engine capacity based road tax structure. Then came the 3-litre T6 and the 2.5T but these smaller motors were still not ‘small' enough for local car buyers, especially when they usually have a penchant for cars with engines that displace 2000cc or lower.

Enter the latest S80 variant - the S80 2.0T. Volvo has introduced a new base S80 variant with the 1999cc GTDi/6-speed Powershift powertrain combination we've already seen in the XC60 and the impending new S60.

On the outside, the new variant can be differentiated from the 2.5T by the different alloy wheel design (they are the same size though), the ‘2.0T' badge on the boot lid and the deletion of the chrome trimmings under the tail lamps, on the front air inlet's horizontal fins and on the lower part of the doors. Everything else is mostly similar to the 2.5T.

Good response and support from Angie at One Shift when I wanted to sell off my old Camry which was due to be scrapped in early February. Would recommend this platform for those wanting to buy or sell their cars.
