Renault Megane RS250 2.0 (M) Review
French Bliss

This hot Frenchie is the last of the hot hatch releases for the year. The resident hot hatch freak finds out if this is finally the one hot enough for him.

Introduction, styling

The French might not have invented the hot hatch genre but the land of champagne and escargot has given us countless mega fun in souped up hatchbacks. Cars like the Renault Clio Williams and the Peugeot 205 GTI are possibly some of the finest hot hatches ever. In recent times, cars like the Renaultsport Clio F1 Team R27 and the Megane F1 Team R26 has continued the French tradition of giving us entertaining hot hatches. The latter gets my vote as the most fun hot hatch in recent times.

Having grown up admiring hot hatches like the lairy Renault 5 Turbo and Peugeot 205 GTI, I have great admiration for French models. I did, after all, owned three different Renault hot hatches (19 16V, 5GT Turbo and Clio 172) in the past. The R26 reaffirmed my belief that the French are the most adept at fun to drive shopping trolleys. For years, the R26 has been one of my favourite hot hatches, but its special status might just have been replaced by the new generation Renaultsport Megane RS you see here.

The new Megane RS is based on the sport coupe body style of the third generation Megane. The new three-door body looks markedly different from the regular five-door Megane hatch's and it looks far prettier and more dramatic than the latter as well as the previous generation three-door Megane the R26 was based on.

In true Renaultsport style, the three-door Megane III exterior gets styling tweaks that are inspired by F1 as well as the Megane Trophy race cars including a large air intake on the aggressive looking front bumper with LED daytime running lights, heavily sculpted side sills, a deep rear bumper with a centrally-mounted exhaust in between the black rear diffuser, a discreet roof spoiler on the hatch and purposeful looking black 18-inch wheels to fill those swollen wheel arches.

All cars for the Singapore market come with the Cup chassis and hence sit on lower suspension than cars without. The Megane's lowered stance gives it an even more purposeful look and angrier attitude.
