Lexus RX270 Executive Review
Smooth Operator

Will a four-cylinder motor in the RX SUV compromise Lexus’ tradition of making the most refined and quietest models in the premium segment. Raymond Lai investigates.

Introduction, styling

The Lexus RX has been an unprecedented success here when it comes to luxury crossover SUVs. The RX was even once the best selling SUV model here in Singapore. Its success also meant that it was a matter of time before other manufacturers want a slice of the RX's compact premium SUV pie and one by one, Lexus' premium brand rivals rolled out compact crossover SUV models to rival the RX. These models include the likes of the BMW X3, Land Rover Freelander, Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60.

With a relatively wide variety of models to choose from the compact crossover SUV segment, the Lexus RX's popularity these days is not as strong as it was before. Lexus though, hopes to kickstart the RX's fortune once again by offering more equipment and features to the RX models as well as adding a new base variant to the line-up.

The new RX270 sits below the V6 RX350 and the hybrid RX450h in the range. As its moniker suggests, the RX270 gets its power from a 2.7-litre four-cylinder engine, making this model the first Lexus sold in Singapore that has a four-pot motor. For local buyers, the RX will not only be more affordable to buy but will be cheaper to tax and run as well. A four-pot will never be as smooth and refined as Lexus' usual V6 or V8 motor so the million dollar question here is will the RX270 be too much of a compromise when it comes to overall refinement because of its lack of cylinders?

On the outside, the RX270 has no distinguishing features when compared to the RX350 other than the badge on the tailgate. Everything on the RX270's exterior, including the radiator grille and the standard fit 18-inch alloy wheels is similar to the V6 model. The third generation RX is not exactly the prettiest car among its competitors - I've always considered it to be too American in design and hence lack purposefulness in the way it looks, which is no surprise considering that the Yanks have the biggest appetite for the RX.
