The sixth generation Jetta is set to blitz the Cat A saloon market when it goes on sale here in June. Raymond Lai previews it in France.

Introduction, styling

Europe is predominantly a hatchback market. The top 10 best selling cars there in 2009 are all hatchback models like the Peugeot 207, Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus and the Fiat Punto. Things are a tad different in emerging regions like Asia though, where the majority of top sellers are booted four-door saloon as well as America where size really matters.

Manufacturers therefore have to develop saloon variants of their hatchback models in order to garner healthy enough sales in these markets. European hatchback models like the Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus have all spawned saloon or notchback spin offs to further boost sales of the hatchback variants for markets like Singapore as a result.

In the case of the Golf, the Jetta has always been considered as the booted version of the most popular car in Europe, even though the third generation model was called the Vento and the fourth gen model, the Bora. Despite the fact that the Golf is more popular in Europe, the Jetta is one of Volkswagen's biggest selling cars elsewhere on the globe, in markets like South America, China as well as the US.

The Jetta is also Volkswagen's best selling car in Singapore during the brand's extraordinary 2010. This, even though, being the fifth generation Jetta while the Golf was already into the sixth generation model. A new sixth generation Jetta therefore, was imminent and the new car was revealed in America in July last year. The car revealed back then though, was the Jetta meant for the US market, with larger less efficient engines, a less sophisticated torsion beam rear suspension and lower quality interior trim and materials.

For the European markets as well as Singapore, Volkswagen will offer an ‘Europeanised' version that is more sophisticated thanks to smaller and more efficient TSI engines, a multi-link rear suspension from the Golf as well as interior trim and materials that are more on par with the rest of the Volkswagen models'. The Euro Jetta was recently unveiled in er, Europe and oneshift was in France to preview and sample the new model that is set to land in Singapore by the middle of the year.

Outwardly, the new sixth generation Jetta looks markedly different from the current sixth generation Golf as well as the car it replaces. Unlike its predecessor, the new car doesn't share a single body panel with the Golf and hence has its own unique looks and lines. At 4644mm in length, the new model is 90mm longer than its predecessor and sits in between the Golf and Passat when it comes to size. The styling is very well-proportioned indeed as there are some obvious overtones from the current Audi A4, not that surprising considering that both the A4 and the Jetta are penned by the same man, Walter de Silva.

Up front, the new car features Volkswagen's slim radiator grille corporate face and mimics more like the new Passat's rather than the Golf's. It is at the rear where the Jetta looks really handsome and very Audi like though. The slim tail lamps and the gently sloping C-pillars give the Jetta an even more upmarket and mature feel when compared to the Golf. The overall styling is quite a difference from the outgoing model's - the Mk V Jetta somehow has that grafted on boot onto a hatchback look while the new car looks very much like a bespoke four-door saloon model.

Only a keen eyed VW freak will be able to differentiate the US Jetta and the Euro model. Subtle distinguishable styling features between the two models include different bumpers, different head and tail lamps as well as different colours and finishes for the horizontal slats on the radiator grille.
