Porsche Cayman S PDK, Audi TTRS Coupe 2.5 TFSI qu Manual Review

With Porsche now under the arm of the Volkswagen Group, there's bound to be civil unrest between the Stuttgart brand and VW's Audi arm when it comes to some niches. Raymond Lai plays umpire to decide which brand makes the better compact sports coupe.

Introduction, styling

When it comes to premium sporty and small roadster/coupe models, one of the first models to come to mind has to be the Porsche Boxster and its fixed head Cayman cousin. Then there's the Cayman's VW Group compatriot, the Audi TT.

The TT has always been considered to be a small coupe that is in a class lower than the Porsche Cayman but with the introduction of the range topping TT RS last year, can the Audi finally be on par with the Cayman or more specifically, the Cayman S?

To see off its newer German rivals, Porsche updated the Boxster/Cayman pair a couple of years back with a raft of changes. The base model gets a new 2.9-litre engine with more poke while the Tiptronic S auto box is superseded by a new PDK dual-clutch transmission to give the entry-level Porsche models improved performance and efficiency. The Cayman S here gets 25bhp more over the model it supersedes thanks to direct injection, as well as the abovementioned seven-speed PDK gearbox.

It seems that when Porsche does a facelift, they'd rather spend time improving the oily bits rather than the aesthetics or looks of the car. The Cayman S here is a case in point. You'd need to squint hard to differentiate the latest model from its predecessor from the outside.

These include a front bumper with larger air intakes and LED daytime running lights as well as LED tail lamp clusters. The changes might be rather minor but details like the LED lights do give the small coupe a more modern feel. The overall look is still familiar Cayman though which means it is not exactly the prettiest small coupe out there.

Next to the Porsche, the TT RS looks almost a scale smaller thanks to its petite proportions and well-toned, athletic look. The standard TT is already a good looking coupe no doubt, but the TT RS' lowered stance, 19-inch wheels and the aggressive RS styling enhancements give it a more purposeful and powerful stance. The visual enhancements look fantastic and can certainly make the Cayman next to it look tame in comparison. This is one car that will a put a smile on your face whenever you look at it before the daily commute in the mornings - it's just so very pretty.
