Introduction, Exterior
The XC60 marked a significant departure from the Swedish brand’s usual boxy design. Having dominated the family SUV/soccer mom market with the wildly successful XC90, the company saw fit to catapult itself into a younger demographic with this mid-size SUV.
In the same spirit as with the previous XC90 update, Volvo has chosen to take a cautious approach to this facelift.
Exterior
Rather than go to the extremes, Volvo gave the relatively young model a slight nip tuck on the outside. From the front, the new car has been given a new face with a lower and wider front fascia.
Where the previous grille was blacked out the new car now sports a chromed grille that affords the car with an air of elegance. The badge has also been enlarged for greater brand visibility.
The daytime running lights that previously flanked the grille have been moved to the lower bumper. Now set at the extremes of the sculpted new bumper, it gives an impression that the SUV is much lower and more planted than it actually is.
Even the bonnet has been given a more sculpted form. There’s a U-shape that’s formed from the A-pillars that give the car a tougher looking nose. A new set of headlights have freshened the design with their bright bi-xenon units. These active bi-xenons swivel 15 degrees left or right when you turn the steering to illuminate the road leading into a corner.
